With the help of his sons Bryan and Graham, Carl Dare continued to guide Dare Foods Ltd. In 1945 the company and family name was changed from “Doerr” to “Dare” creating The Dare Company, Limited, later renamed Dare Foods Limited. Doerr, became President of the company and began an expansion program that introduced Dare products in more than 40 countries. The company now known as Dare Foods Limited was originally known as the C.H. ![]() In 2003 a new Kitchener office building was constructed to preserve and highlight the original 1952 yellow-brick structure. ![]() ![]() A new office building was constructed in Kitchener in 1952. In 1942 the Kitchener plant was destroyed by a fire and in 1943 a smaller wartime replacement was constructed on a former flying field on the outskirts of Kitchener. In 1919 a larger bakery was built in Kitchener to replace the original plant and at the same time a line of candies was added. Doerr opened a grocery store on the corner of Breithaupt and Gzowski (now Weber) Streets in Berlin (now Kitchener, Ontario) that by 1892 had become a biscuit-manufacturing operation. Dare candies are made in Toronto and Milton, Ontario. It manufactures cookies, crackers, candies and fine breads at its seven plants in Ontario, Quebec and South Carolina. If you love toasted coconut, go ahead and toast the coconut for a few minutes before in a skillet, then wait for it to cool before adding it to the batter.Dare Foods Limited is a family-owned business based in Kitchener, Ontario. You can if you want to! I tested these both ways and love these cookies wither way. Why? Because it has a more distinct coconut-y flavor, which is ultimately what we're going for. I tested these cookies multiple times-with unsweetened coconut and sweetened coconut-and found that using sweetened coconut is the way to go. To freeze: wait for cookies to cool, then store then in a sealed freezer-safe bag for up to 3 months.Or, you can place cookies in a plastic bag in the freezer for up to 30 days. Storage: store cookies in a sealed container at room temperature for up to 3 days.Want to take these up a notch? Add ½ cup chocolate chips to the batter!.It's completely different than all purpose flour and the recipe won't work the same. Though these are coconut cookies, I don't recommend using coconut flour.Then, wait at least 10 minutes for them to cool before eating! After the cookies come out of the oven, make sure to wait 2-3 minutes before transferring them to a cooling rack.One of my favorite things about this recipe is that there's no need to chill the dough beforehand.Can easily be made vegan (see "notes" in recipe card below).Filled with coconut, though not overly coconut-y.Incredibly soft and chewy - the perfect cookie texture.Reminiscent of my coconut cake and coconut bread (two of my favorites!).Now, if you're looking for a healthier cookie recipe, you may want to check out my almond flour peanut butter cookies - just FYI!
